10 Ways To Boost Your Confidence & Self-Esteem

November 08, 2022

A lot of people attribute their success to being confident but very few will be able to tell you how one can be confident. While some people are ‘born confident’, confidence is a quality that can be developed over time by cultivating some habits.

Confidence is built on different things, but overall it is built on choices and accomplishments that feed your passion, and that make you feel happy and proud of who you are. Discovering these things is one of the most worthwhile pursuits of your life. Here are 1o ways you can begin building your confidence:

  1. Achieve Your Goals: The important thing to remember is that confidence is built on accomplishments. Start by setting short-term goals and achieving them. It can be something as simple as tasks you need to do everyday and then gradually start having monthly, bi-annual and annual goals. Keep in mind that progress is incremental, and big changes do not happen overnight. The key is to set a goal for yourself and then edge towards it every single day. The ‘Growth Activities’ section of the heyy, app has plenty of tools that can aid you with goal-setting and monitoring.

  2. Monitor & Review Your Progress: Be it losing weight and getting healthy, earning more money or getting promoted at work, the best way to know if you’re actually closer to the goal is to monitor and review your progress. Set quantifiable goals and keep measuring whether or not you’ve progressed. When you see that you’ve been making progress, you will be motivated to continue pursuing the goal.

  3. Have A Strong Value System: While this may sound surprising, most confident people live by a value system and make their decisions based on that value system, even when it’s hard and not necessarily in their best interest. Your value system defines your character and personality so defining your values helps you feel proud of who you truly are.

  4. Exercise & Workout: While exercising regularly is good for health, it helps with managing stress in a better manner, preventing depression and anxiety, having better focus and improving all aspects of life. It also means that you are taking time out to take care of yourself.

  5. Don’t Fear Failure: It isn’t possible that every endeavour of yours will be successful. Fear of failure cripples many people and stops them from taking risks that might be worthwhile. If you set big goals and have big dreams, you’re going to feel overwhelmed, and you’re inevitably going to feel like you can’t do it. You need to look within yourself at such times and have the courage to keep going. Successful people take risks, fail and learn. Keep the fear aside and keep going.

  6. Stand Up For Yourself: When your goal, project, etc. is in its early stages, and someone says that your goal is stupid, or that you can not do it, you may end up believing them. You need to stand up for yourself and tell them that they’re wrong. You need to believe in yourself and your values.

  7. Follow Through: You will be respected when you do something you said you would do. You will then start believing in yourself as you realise that you are not afraid of putting in the work and effort. Action gives your words meaning, and it will help you pave a path to accomplishing your goals, strengthening your relationships and feeling proud of who you are.

  8. Think Long-Term: The foundation of unhappiness is decisions made for short-term comfort that impede long-term goals. If you’re trying to save money, you can’t go out to eat as much, if you’re studying for the GMAT or IIT, you can’t go out with friends as often, if you’re trying to lose weight, you can not eat french fries often, etc. Big goals require big sacrifices, you have to dig deep and really discipline yourself. You have to decide if your short-term comfort is more important than your long-term goals, but know that long-term goals will bring you far more happiness in the long run than your short-term comfort.

  9. Don’t Care What Others Think: There may be rejections, negative feedback loops that may come in the way of you achieving your goals but you need to know how and when to draw boundaries and which narratives to consider. You must be resolute. If you think you can do it, you can do it.

  10. Do More Of What Makes You Happy: What do you love to do in your spare time? Is it to get outside, hike, trek and enjoy the outdoors? Or do you live for lying on your couch and watching all the excellent television that’s available? Whatever it is you love, create space for it, because life is short- you need time to enrich your life and to recharge to be your best self.
